A pesticide is a chemical
substance produced and sold for the control of a pest species. Chemicals
used to repel or attract pest species may also be regulated as pesticides.
In the current version of the Federal
Insecticide, Fungicide, Rodenticide Act (FIFRA), the legal definition
of a pesticide has further been expanded to include defoliants,
plant growth regulators, and desiccants.
Pesticides are available in various formulations. The pesticide
itself, or the ingredient which actually has the toxic action, is
called the active ingredient. A formulation is a combination of
the active ingredient and one or more inert or "other" ingredients.
Other ingredients usually are added to improve the effectiveness
of the active ingredient. These inert ingredients usually determine
the method of application. Examples of pesticide formulations include
dusts, sprays, wettable powders, flowables, emulsifiable concentrates,
granules, baits and encapsulated pesticides. |
